(KNSI) - A St. Cloud elementary student is the winner of the United Way of Central Minnesota's LIVE UNITED essay contest.

Miriam Julliete Garcia Mijangos, from Madison Elementary, had her essay chosen as the best example of how to LIVE UNITED out of more than 400 entries from across Central Minnesota.

Miriam received the grand prize award of a $200 gift card.

14 runners-up received a $75 gift card.

The United Way says the 10-year-old's essay, along with the other submissions, are all great examples of how children understand how the simplest acts of kindness can make a huge difference.

Miriam's essay is below.

"My name is Miriam Julliete Garcia Mijangos, and I am 10 years old. I try to help my community by encouraging my mom to donate some of my clothes for the people that don’t have any! Two weeks ago, there was a homeless man by Walmart. I had Chipoltle and I gave it to him. I also help my community by helping keep our classroom organized and clean! I try to think of others first and I try to help my classmates when they need help or if they don’t get something. When someone litters, I pick it up and throw it in the garbage. When my parents and sisters need my help, I give it to them. I always try my best when I don’t get something right. I don’t give up. I keep on trying. If I don’t do it, I won’t get anywhere in life!"
